KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 30  -- The five principles of the Rukun Negara must be respected and used as a life guide by every Malaysian, especially members of the police force tasked with maintaining peace in the country, said Kuala Lumpur Police Training Centre (Pulapol) Commandant SAC Datuk Shamsudin Mat.

"As someone who upholds the fourth principle of Rukun Negara, which is the Rule of Law, I believe it is necessary to embrace the Rukun Negara to ensure that harmony in the country is maintained,” he said when met by Bernama recently.

He added that embracing the tenets of the Rukun Negara was not only key to fostering racial harmony and unity, but also in driving Malaysia to become a developed nation.

"PDRM (Royal Malaysia Police), as the nation's security agency, tries its best to inculcate the principles of Rukun Negara among its personnel from the moment the recruits are at Pulapol,” he said.

The five principles of the Rukun Negara are Belief in God, Loyalty to King and Country, Upholding the Constitution, Rule of Law, and Good Behaviour and Morality.

Taking the first tenet of the Rukun Negara -- Belief in God -- as an example, he said it was an apt principle because no religion in the world condoned crime.

Meanwhile, sub-Inspector Sazali Sarjuni, of the KL Pulapol Integrity and Standard Compliance Branch, said the Rukun Negara should be taught in schools so that children will learn to appreciate the Rukun Negara at a young age and grow up to be Malaysians with a distinct national identity.
