SEREMBAN,  Sept 4 -- The fight against COVID-19 is not over, but it did not dampen the spirit of Malaysians abroad from celebrating the country’s 63rd National Day.

They included Malaysians in Medan, Indonesia who celebrated the occasion in high spirit under the new normal by observing the prescribed standard operating procedures (SOP) to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Malaysian Tourism director in Medan, Indonesia, Hishamuddin Mustafa said Malaysians in Medan would normally gather on Aug 31 to celebrate the occasion with various programmes, including National Day procession and performances to reflect Malaysia’s multi-racial society.

“This year, ‘Malaysia Prihatin (Malaysia Cares) has been chosen as the theme for National Day and Malaysia Day. It carries a deep meaning to Malaysians in line with the current situation with the country still facing the COVID-19 pandemic," he said in a statement sent to Bernama here today.

He said the COVID-19 outbreak had adversely affected the tourism sector and hoped the pandemic would end soon and the situation to return to normal for the tourism sector to thrive again.

“Hopefully Malaysia remains peaceful, prosperous, and together we help to break the chain of the COVID-19 infection,” he added.

The National Day celebration in Medan was opened by the Malaysian Consul General Aiyub Omar and was attended by representatives from the consulates-general of Singapore, Germany, Timor Leste, Malta, and the Netherlands, as well as from the Malaysian Students Representatives and the Malaysian Community in Medan.
